About Put-in-Bay Airport
The Put-in-Bay Airport is located in Ohio, United States. The airport is situated on South Bass Island and is accessible by ferry from the mainland. The airport has a single runway and is capable of handling small private aircraft.
In the early 1920s, Put-in-Bay Airport was created as a grassy airstrip for small planes. The first recorded flight from the airport was on July 4, 1923. In 1925, the runway was paved and lights were installed for night landings.
During World War II, the airport was used as a training base for Navy pilots. After the war, the airport fell into disrepair and was abandoned.
In 1970, a group of businessmen revived the airport and it has been in operation ever since. The runway was lengthened and improved to accommodate small jets and commercial flights. Today, the airport is a vital part of Put-in-Bay’s tourism industry.
